Scripture Reading: Proverbs 4:25-27
“Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.” (Proverbs 4:25-27)
- The fourth chapter of Proverbs closes with warnings — a warning against abusive language, blasphemy, cursing, and filthy talk. One reveals who he is by the words of his mouth. Jesus said that it wasn’t what a man put into his mouth that defiled him, but what came out of his mouth, i.e. the things he spoke revealed the state of his soul.
- “Let thine eyes look straight before thee…” is a warning not to flirt with dangers of all kinds. It is true that the eyes are the windows of the soul. One must always be very careful how one uses his or her eyes. They can get you into trouble or they can be used to get others into trouble. Keep the touch of holiness in your eyes.
- “Ponder the path of your feet…” or think before you leap. Don’t be hasty. Think things over carefully before you finalize a decision, and once you have made up your mind let your way be established, i.e. stick to it, and don’t give up. Hold on to the vision. God will help you if you have prayed through and know His will.
- “Turn not to the right hand nor the left…” Finally, stay in the middle of the road. Don’t get too far on the right nor on the left. Many wander from side to side. And then they wonder why they have so much trouble.
It’s easy to keep out of trouble if you do these few things. And the Lord will be with you and help you.
