March 29: The Two Highways

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 12:26, 28; 13:6; 14:12; 16:17, 25

“The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.” (Proverbs 12:26)

A righteous man walks the Highway of Holiness. He is not easily seduced, nor led astray. His heart warns him to stay away from evil, and he has no desire to do what is wrong in the eyes of God.

But the wicked are easily seduced because they walk in the gutters of sin. There is mud and filth under their feet. This makes their pathway slippery. It is so easy for them to fall because they slip and slide with every step they make.

Nor is it any use for them to determine that they will  walk without falling because they are on the wrong road. They are on the devil’s road which leads to Hell, and it has many pitfalls. “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12).

The only thing man can do is to get off the wrong road and get on the right one through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit alone can put man on the right road — the road that leads man home to God.

“In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.” (Proverbs 12:28)

If one could only see the signs that lead to these two different roads! The one has signs all along it that read: DEATH, DESTRUCTION, HELL. And the other has signs that read: LIFE, ETERNAL BLESSINGS, HEAVENLY HOME.

I am convinced that, even if they could read these signs with their own eyes many would still persist in going the way of destruction. Many have been repeatedly warned, but they still refuse to heed the warnings.

“Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.” (Proverbs 13:6)

Your own righteousness, which is in your heart, will keep you and guard you from sin. Because you have the Spirit of Holiness (i.e. the Holy Spirit) inside of you, Who warns you against evil, you have a desire for holiness that enables you to live uprightly.

But the wickedness in the heart of the sinner will cause him to be defeated. You cannot become holy by mental consent. You need the Holy One to keep you holy.

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 14:12)

Many are deceived into thinking that the path they tread is not dangerous because so many are walking the same pathway. They are deceived by the multitudes who are also deceived. Jesus said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:” (Matthew 7:13).

The devil is very clever. He lets them have just enough religion to convince them that they are all right. And as they associate with others of like mind, they are convinced that this is true. But oh, how dreadful will be their awakening!

“The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul. ” (Proverbs 16:17)

Again the writer confirms that one must leave the highway of the damned and get on the highway of the Lord. It is only on this highway that one can preserve his soul.

“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 16:25)

So important is this warning that the Lord repeats it twice in the book of Proverbs.
